Ladder Coffee Roasters - Riverside

Ladder started as front-porch coffee pop-ups in 2017 that drew crowds of a hundred, and there's a reason the name means what it means: founder Aaron Rivkin is open about coming through addiction and a year of incarceration before coffee gave him a way to climb, and he built the company around handing that ladder to the next person. The Riverside shop — the roaster's first true sit-down café, opened in late 2018 in a renovated 1904 apartment building called The Dormitory on the west edge of downtown — is where that story became a neighborhood fixture. The avocado toast gets singled out constantly, the brown sugar and clove latte is the drink Rivkin himself points to, and the house-roasted single-origins earn the kind of praise — smooth, never burnt — that coffee people don't hand out casually.

The old building does a lot of the charm here: warm, historic, and one of downtown's better rooms to settle in with a laptop. Fair warnings: it closes at 3 PM (2 on Sundays), so it's a morning-and-lunch spot, street parking can take a lap or two, and more than a few reviewers find the prices a notch high for the portions. What keeps them coming back anyway is a latte that's genuinely worth the walk.
